Installation Requirements
The RNLI were looking for a new solution to manage access to the Lifeboat crews at Sennen Cove Lifeboat station in Cornwall. In an exposed coastal location such as Sennen Cove, rust caused by the coastal environment can be a major issue. The original automatic barrier which had been in place for a number of years had to be removed due to rust that had built up over time.
After removing this barrier system, the RNLI used orange traffic cones to control access to their station. This, however, was not a long-term or practical solution as the cones had to be moved often to gain access and could easily be displaced. In their search for a replacement system, the RNLI approached local installer, South West Garage Doors (SWGD).
Installation Needs
The RNLI required a solution which would allow crews and visitors entry to the lifeboat station but also prevent other parties from accessing the area without authorisation. They also needed a product that would be capable of withstanding adverse weather conditions, including sea spray. The new solution would have to perform reliably throughout the year and the preference was for a new robust automatic security barrier.
Automatic Barrier Solution
The solution, recommended by the installation company, South West Garage Doors, was to install a BFT Automation Maxima Ultra 36 barrier in stainless steel finish. The Maxima Ultra 36 is BFT’s flagship barrier, which is suitable for intensive use and can provide a drive-through gap of up to 6 metres – the perfect size for cars, small vans and lifeboat trailers to pass through. The Maxima Ultra’s specification option of stainless steel provides weather-resistance, minimising the damage caused by saltwater spray. The stainless steel casing ensures that the electromechanical barrier mechanism is protected from the elements. The Maxima Ultra 36 barrier was installed in November 2019 by South West Garage Doors and is in regular use, providing vital access for the Lifeboat crews.
